Mobile Anti-Virus Should I worry about my mobile device becoming infected with a virus? Well the first Windows Mobile 'proof of concept' virus called Dust/Duts emerged mid-2004. Click here for image. Since then there's been little activity, however whilst the current threat of infection is currently relatively low the spread of mobile email and converged phone-PDAs able to access the Internet could well see that threat set to increase. You can buy mobile anti-virus software from the following vendors: 1. McAfee VirusScan Mobile looks like it's available for Pocket PC and SmartPhone though they only list a few specific models on their website (Motorola MPX200, Audiovox SMT5600, QTek 8010, VOQ A11, HP iPAQ 6315, SPH i700 and Siemens SX66). 2. F-Secure Mobile AV available for Windows Mobile 2003(SE) for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile 2003(SE) for SmartPhone. 3. Symantec AntiVirus for Handhelds available for Pocket PC 2002 and Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC. 4. Airscanner AntiVirus for Pocket PC (Windows Mobile 2003 or 5.0) and Airscanner AntiVirus for SmartPhone (SmartPhone 2003 or higher). They also offer a 30-day trial for both Pocket PC and SmartPhone. Whether you intend to buy mobile anti-virus software, here are some tips for avoiding infection: 1. Only download or install content from trusted sources. That goes for applications, games, photos, videos and ring tones. 2. Avoid setting your Bluetooth to Discoverable (Start > Settings > Connections > Bluetooth). 3. Avoid setting your device to receive incoming Beams (Start > Settings > Connections > Beam). |
