PDA Essentials Lives Again! Up until recently PDA Essentials magazine was published by Highbury Entertainment Ltd but has been acquired by Imagine Publishing following the company falling into receivership. Imagine Publishing Deputy Editor Andy Betts had the following to say about the new magazine: "We are putting a lot of resources behind the magazine to drive the title forward under our flag and the readers of the publication can expect to see an immediate improvement within the title when it goes on the shelves." Imagine Publishing are currently working on issue 47 with an imminent release date planned, so watch this space. |

Mobile Email and More Devices! The hot mobile topic of the moment has to be mobile email - in particular Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. For those that aren't already in the know, Exchange ActiveSync became available with Microsoft Exchange 2003 and allows you to synchronize Email, Calendar and Contacts on your mobile device across wireless networks like GPRS. "So what?" I hear you say "I've had POP on my PDA for the last couple of years..." Exchange ActiveSync is about more than just sending and receiving mobile email - it's about having a fully synchronized Outlook folder on your mobile device, including the ability to respond to meeting requests, keep your Calendar up to date, delete or mark emails as read and much more. Pushy Email A previous disadvantage with Exchange ActiveSync was the lack of push Email, but that's set to change with the introduction of a new Service Pack for Exchange Server 2003 and something called either AKU2 or MSFP (depending on who you talk to) for your mobile device. AKU2/MSFP will be included in future device ROMs, so again it's a case of watch this space. More Devices The increased take-up of Exchange mobile email may well be having an affect on the availability of new Windows mobile devices with phone/internet built in. Palm have just released their first Windows Mobile device the Treo 700w and HP have a new Mobile Messenger hw6900 series in the pipeline. And we really like the look of the long awaited Motorola Q (if it's ever released). Our advice: if you're thinking about buying a new mobile device consider one with phone/internet built-in or you might be replacing it within the year. Where can I buy? We like eXpansys because their website lists all the latest mobile gear and they're just down the road in Manchester. |
