Tip: Look After Your Lithium-Ion!

Most mobile devices now ship with either Lithium-Ion or Lithium-Polymer batteries and whilst there are still plenty of urban legends around about batteries (such as the memory effect) here are a few truths about how to get the most from your battery:

1. Do not let your battery go flat!
If your Li-Ion/Poly battery goes completely flat you may not be able to re-charge it at all. This is because recharging a dead Li-Ion/Poly battery can be dangerous so an internal safety switch turns the battery off.

2. Charge your battery little and often.
Try to avoid letting the charge in your battery drop too low. Keep it topped up with charge as often as you can. Unlike older Nickel-Metal-Hydride (NiMH) or Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) batteries, this does not 'wear out' the battery.

3. Buy a second battery.
Keep a second battery on charge and swap it over when the charge in your first drops to around 50%.

4. Keep your battery cool.
The cooler you keep your Li-Ion/Poly battery the longer it will last. This applies whether the battery is in use or not.

5. Store your battery at half-charge and 0 degrees C.
If you intend to long-term store a Li-Ion/Poly battery you should charge it to about 50% and keep it somewhere cool like a fridge. Just warm to room temperature before use and away you go!
